That’s me holding a macaron shaped like a Toy Story alien. If you put that on your profile, someone is going to ask about it. That’s the whole idea behind a good prompt: give her something easy to reply to.
In data terms, your photos drive the click and your prompts drive the conversion. A lot of guys get the match and then nothing happens, and the prompts are usually why.
Why most prompts are dead ends
A dead-end prompt is one that’s true but gives her nothing to do with it. Common versions:
- The list: “I like travel, food, and movies.” So does nearly everyone.
- The joke with no follow-up: “Ask me.” Ask you what?
- The negative: “No drama, no games.” It tells her what you don’t want, not who you are.
- The résumé: Job title and nothing else.
What a conversation-starting prompt does
A good prompt is specific, a little personal, and leaves an obvious next question. Think of it as giving her a handle to grab.
Before and after
Prompt: “My simple pleasures”
Before: “Good food and good company.”
After: “Finding the one bakery in town that makes themed macarons. Current record: a Toy Story alien. Tell me your best bakery find.”
Prompt: “I geek out on”
Before: “Trains.”
After: “Old railroad routes. I’ll happily plan a day trip around a train ride with a good lunch at the end. Window seat or aisle?”
Prompt: “Typical Sunday”
Before: “Relaxing.”
After: “Farmers market, too much coffee, and one ambitious recipe that’s 50/50 on working out. Looking for a taste-tester.”
Prompt: “The way to win me over is”
Before: “Be yourself.”
After: “Recommend me a museum I haven’t been to yet. Bonus points if it has a weird gift shop.”
A simple formula
- Be specific. Name the thing: the show, the trail, the dish.
- Add a detail. Something that sounds like you, not a template.
- End with a hook. A question, a choice, or an invitation.
Then check your prompts against your photos. The best profiles connect the two, so a hobby photo and a hobby prompt reinforce each other and she has two reasons to bring it up.
